Most people do not open a book about divorce or child support because they are curious. They open it because something has already started. A paper has been served, or a talk with a spouse has gone somewhere it cannot come back from. They want to know what happens next before someone else explains it to them in a courtroom.

I have spent thirty years watching that moment happen to Anne Arundel and Howard County families. The decisions that end up mattering most tend to get made in the first few weeks, by people who do not yet know they are making them. Whether to sign a complete agreement now or fight over the last ten percent. Whether to talk to a lawyer before or after answering the other side.

The first half of this book follows a Maryland divorce from the day it is filed to the day a judge signs the decree. The second half follows the child support guidelines from the statute to the number that lands on a monthly bank statement.

This is not legal advice for any specific case. It does not replace sitting down with a lawyer licensed in Maryland who has seen your paperwork.
